What is FTP?

FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol, and it is simply the method in which most web site owners upload and download content to and from their web server/ web sites. FTP clients are programs that let you access your web server from any computer in the world, basically bridging the gap between your hard drive and the web server being leased to you by your web hosting provider.

FTP accounts are set up within the web hosting control panel, and they can be created for any web site or site directory desired. Using FTP to upload and organize content is one of the best ways to keep your web sites updated with regular content, without the hassle of uploading each web page individually. Most FTP clients are free and very easy to use.
